The play follows the story of the cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine, who invites an eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, to conduct a séance in his home. However, things take a lively turn when the ghost of Charles' deceased wife, Elvira, is inadvertently summoned back to life. Chaos ensues as Elvira competes with Charles' current wife, Ruth, for his attention.
